Their Kindred Earth: Photographs by William Earle Williams was organized over a three-year period by Jenny Parsons in collaboration with the Museum’s third Artist-in-Residence, William Williams, and historian Carolyn Wakeman.

Join Parsons for an overview of the exhibition of newly commissioned photographs which make visible little-known sites across Old Lyme, the state of Connecticut, and the nation that are significant to enslavement, abolition, and emancipation. Hear about Williams’s history with the region, including his friendship with modernist photographer Walker Evans, and how the Witness Stones Old Lyme project inspired him to connect with Parsons and Wakeman. 

Parsons will summarize the major themes in the exhibition with a virtual tour through its sections, which include “Enslavement on Lyme Street,” “Black History Here,” “Freedom’s Path,” and “Liberty’s Pioneers.” The 120 photographs in the exhibition by Williams acknowledge and honor the lives of the Black and Indigenous people who contributed in essential and often unrecognized ways to Connecticut’s society, culture, and economy.
